Search engine Google is to target small businesses and enable the purchase keyword advertising that appears on the google.com search results page. The service will be called AdWords.

When a user enters a search key word, small ads will appear within the results page, irrespective of whether an advertiser has its own site.

The service will also provide users with design and reporting tools to create their own online advertising campaign using a bespoke maintenance page (www.adwords.google.com).

Advertisers will be able to amend ads in real-time and monitor ad statistics and daily impression estimates so that advertising spend can be constantly assessed.

Google claims that 325 businesses have used the service since its beta test debut earlier this month.

Larry Page, Google's co-founder and chief executive, claimed: 'Google has carefully built and scaled the AdWords programme to address the needs of any business by providing a one-stop resource that is affordable and easy to use.'
