Google introduces new searches amid IPO speculation

LONDON - Google has introduced five new search technologies as speculation continues about its future flotation plans later this year.

The new searches initially affect the US but there are plans to introduce international versions in coming months.

Users will now be able to conduct an area code search that will provide a map of the region at the top of the results page.

There is a Universal Product Code search where users can find more information about a specific product by entering its UPC, the number on the bottom of a bar code typically displayed on product packaging.

Google has also introduced a flight tracking service; US postal service tracking numbers to directly check the status of a USPS package; and vehicle ID numbers, which link to pages with more information about the make and model of a specific car.

The search engine is widely tipped to be looking at an IPO in April this year that could see one third of its stock sold to the public generating $4bn (拢2.16bn).

It is also facing up to the possibility that Yahoo will drop it as a supplier and introduce its own search technology, as the two companies compete for revenue from search engine advertising.
