Google adds local search to US engine

Local search has been integrated into Google.com, with the launch of Google Local.

The facility lets users search for local information, drawing data from Google.com, including business listings, maps and relevant web pages.

It has been launched in the US, with plans for a UK rollout, though no date has been confirmed.

Local information for specific keywords or locations appears at the top of Google.com search results, marked by a compass icon that links users to a Google Local search results page with phone numbers and addresses.

Kate Burns, managing director for UK ad sales, said: "This is just the start of Google localisation. We will bring it to Europe."
