GMG appoints MD to look after Scottish radio assets

The Guardian Media Group has appointed a managing director for its entire Scottish radio division following an expansion of the company's radio assets.

Real Radio Scotland managing director Billy Anderson has been promoted to take on the role, with responsibility for GMG's portfolio of stations north of the border.

Anderson joined GMG as sales director for Real Radio in 2002 and following the group's acquisition of Saga and its purchase of Q96 - now rebranded as Rock Radio - looks after three stations.

Elsewhere in GMG Radio, Roy Bennett, managing director of Smooth in the North West, has been made managing director of GMG Radio in the same area, bringing Century FM in the region under his remit.

The company has also appointed two new managing directors, to Real Radio in Yorkshire and Century FM in the North East.

Steve South, who was sales director of Real Radio, now manages the stations while Century FM head of sales Debbie Bowman takes on the managing director role there. Before she joined the station in 2001, Bowman was sales manager for Emap Radio's North East stations.

"As our radio division grows, it makes sense to appoint managing directors who work across a portfolio of stations," said Shaun Bowron, group operations director at GMG Radio, who believes the new appointments will ensure its radio stations "continue on their current paths to outperform the markets they serve".
