GM Daewoo in hunt to fill top European post

GM Daewoo is hunting a European marketing director, following the return of Janet Eckhoff to her native US.

Eckhoff, who oversaw marketing during the Korean car company's takeover by General Motors, is to work for GM in Detroit in an undisclosed global role.

GM appointed Eckhoff as marketing director for Daewoo in Europe in July 2002. She moved from the role of e-commerce and dealer development chief at GM Europe. One of her major initiatives was overseeing GM Daewoo's appointment of dfgw as its lead pan-European agency and European network Buehler & Partners to create supporting retail and print advertising.

The news of Eckhoff's departure coincides with the appointment of a UK head of marketing at GM Daewoo. Rob Smettem, who joins in the new role of director of marketing and public affairs, previously headed global marketing communications at Jaguar Cars.

Smettem will be responsible for all UK marketing under the direction of the company's European headquarters. Prior to joining Jaguar, Smettem held various marketing, sales and finance roles at Ford.

David Stubbs joins the company as UK director of sales from management consultancy AT Kearney.

Daewoo's UK marketing was previously overseen by marketing services manager Nigel Unwin. He will now report to Smettem.

Daewoo UK went into administration in October and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of GM Daewoo. GM has taken on responsibility for customer service agreements and marketing in the UK.

Earlier this month, Daewoo launched a European advertising campaign through dfgw, which uses the strapline 'Not your average driver'. The advertisements will run until the end of the month.

Daewoo is seeking to boost its UK market share, which was 0.39% for January 2003. This compares poorly with September 2000, when its market share experienced a peak of 1.7%.
