Gloomy December hits Sunday newspaper circulations

LONDON - December fulfilled its expectations of being a tough month for selling newspapers, with every title seeing a fall in circulation bar Scotland's Sunday Mail.

Worst hit was the Daily Star Sunday, falling a whopping 14.56% of its circulation to report an average of 360,416 copies, compared with 421,841 in November.

Other red tops fared somewhat better. The News of the World managed to keep losses down to a 3.46% drop, selling an average of 3,167,435 copies, with front page splashes including the Manchester United sex scandal and an interview with 'Strictly Come Dancing' winner Alesha Dixon.

The Sunday Mirror lost 3.18% of its circulation, with a figure of 1,315,188 and The People was down to 674,781 copies, a fall of 1.32%. Only Trinity Mirror sister title the Sunday Mail saw a rise, adding 0.22% to sell an average of 488,362.

Other titles to suffer were The Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Times, down by 5.27% and 5.40% respectively. The Sunday Telegraph, which has a new deputy editor in Dan Roberts, had an average circulation of 611,293. The Sunday Times easily retains its hold as the biggest-selling quality newspaper, with an average of 1,148,329 copies.

At The Observer, there was equally dim news with circulation down by 5.49% to 429,420 copies.

The Independent on Sunday, which revealed today that editor Tristan Davies is stepping down after six years, saw a slide in circulation of 2.53%, meaning it dipped below the 200,000-copy mark for the first time in the second quarter of 2007. Davies, who took over from Janet Street-Porter in 2001, is being replaced in the short term by deputy editor John Mullin.

The Mail on Sunday, which is relaunching this week, dropped almost 5% of its circulation in December, reporting a figure of 2,209,642. The Sunday Express was down by 1.42% to 677,480.

The figures were published today by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
