Gordon will take the role of group commercial director and report to Global Radio chief executive Stephen Miron, himself a coup for the company when he was recruited from Associated Newspapers in August. Gordon and Miron take up their new roles on 1 December.

In the meantime, Don Thomson, Global Radio's chief operating officer, will continue to fill the role of acting group commercial director. From 1 December, Thomson will revert back to the chief operating officer role.

Gordon's departure from News International was revealed in July, following the merger of the Times Media Group and News Group Newspaper sales teams.

It is thought he was kept on by News International to help with the merger process, which is now complete. But with his role no longer in existence, Gordon will not be directly replaced at News International.

Speaking exclusively to Media Week, Gordon said: "I have been looking for a new challenge for a while now. I have known Stephen [Miron] for a long time and always been impressed by him. And now having met [Global Radio group chief executive] Ashley Tabor and heard his visions for the company and its brands, I felt I had to be a part of it."

Regarding his impending change from press to radio, Gordon said: "Over the past eight to nine years, I have worked around a lot of products other than newspapers and over the past two years, my role has been all about digital products. I have had to recognise the value of content and make money through different distribution channels. Radio is another distribution channel and I am excited about that challenge."

Gordon held a number of roles at News International, including commercial director of Times Newspapers and director of advertising of News Group Newspapers.

Before rejoining News International in 2004, he spent four years as managing director of Virtual Internet, an internet service provider.

Gordon will be in charge of a slimmed down Global Radio commercial team. Last week, it emerged that approximately 80 people will be shed as a result of the integration of both GCap's and Global's commercial teams.
