Thomson, whose two years at Magic has coincided with four top Rajar spots for the station, including the last three quarters, is the first major hire for the Global board since Richard Park joined as executive director in July.
As consultant programme director for Magic 105.4, Park has previously spoken openly about his admiration for Thomson and the appointment to Global will be considered a major promotion.
Thomson began her career at the now defunct Jazz FM, where she spent two years as marketing executive, and returned in 2001, following a spell as marketing manager at Carlton Screen Advertising.
She joined Magic as a marketing consultant in 2005 and a year later was promoted to marketing director. Thomson, who will be based in London, will take up her post in the spring.
In her new position, she will be responsible for marketing Heart, arguably Magic's closest rival, as well as speech station LBC and dance brand Galaxy.
