Glamour debuts with a strong performance

LONDON - Conde Nast's launch of a magazine that women can slip into their handbags has proved a popular one as the pint-sized monthly Glamour has recorded its first ABC of 451,486.

Glamour came in just behind Cosmopolitan, which rose 0.5% to 452,176 year on year. Cosmo managed to confound critics who expected it to record a drop in circulation.

IPC's Marie Claire, however, is not enjoying the same success. Its sales have nose-dived 11.9% year-on-year to 370,089 from a high of 450,000 at the end of 1999.

The figures will increase pressure on recently appointed editor Marie O'Riordan to stem the decline. The last editor, Liz Jones, quit the title in response to its falling circulation, which has dropped 7.6% since December.

O'Riordan has yet to make her mark on the magazine but sources are confident she will be able to turn around its fortunes.

The market as a whole has been in decline and in the last six months has fallen nearly 18%. The worst hit are She, which is down 8.7%; Family Circle, which is down 15.10% and Woman's Journal, which is down 11.40%. Essentials scrapes the bottom of the barrel with a 24.9% decline to 190,004.

Under its new editor, Trish Halpin, Red was right on track, regaining the ground it lost in the previous six months. Period-on-period sales were up 11.4% to 172,793, shaking off the slump in the six months to December, which saw sales fall to 155,083.
