The show involved a plane soaring through ever-changing environments and took place at the GKN pavilion, which was attended by more than 2,000 aerospace industry A-listers and clients at Farnborough Airshow in Hampshire this week (11-15 July).
Using a physical 5m 3D scale model of a passenger aeroplane mounted against a 6m by 3m wall as the backdrop, the wall and the model were projection-mapped to create the illusion of the plane flying through a multitude of weather conditions and environments.
The 3D visual content and graphics were developed to describe the many manufacturing components and advanced technologies developed by GKN.
Using multi-layered projection-mapping techniques, the 3D graphics were then overlaid and wrapped onto the contours of the model plane, including the fuselage, the wings, the engine and the tail fins.
The display was delivered in a compact space and, with the audience only two to three metres away. Drive used nine projectors and very high pixel resolution to cover the model with five separate content layers. This enabled the audience to view around the aircraft and experience the mapped projections from all angles at a close distance.
To complete the experience, bespoke music, voiceovers and sound effects were used.
