The electronically measured survey provides an alternative picture to the radio industry's official diary-based Rajar measurement research, which comes out tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow's figures are likely to show Capital again leading easy-listening rivals Heart and Magic FM. In the last set three months ago, Capital narrowly led Magic with Heart trailing in third.
In GfK's figures Chysalis's Heart tops the London charts with a weekly reach of 2.072m listeners, just 25,000 ahead of Capital. They are closely followed by Emap's Magic FM with 1.924m listeners.
There is a wide gap on a second close group of three led by Emap's Kiss FM in fourth place with 1.502m. Virgin Radio AM/FM is in fifth with 1.479m and TalkSPORT in sixth with 1.424m.
LBC 97.3 FM and Classic FM occupy seventh and eight places with 1.260m and 1.134m listeners respectively.
GfK's audiometer-based survey is funded by The Wireless Group, which is critical of the current diary system and its caretaker, industry measurement body Rajar.
Wireless Group chief executive Kelvin MacKenzie wants Rajar to introduce the new audiometer technology as soon as possible.
Rajar is continuing tests on two audiometers after eliminating GfK's Radiocontrol audiometer from tests earlier this year. The two models are the Arbitron Portable People Meter and the Eurisko Media Monitor.
