The research by electronic ratings system GfK Media GB found that for radio audiences in London, Classic FM had the biggest percentage of over-45s listening at 69%, followed by LBC News, LBC and, in a tie for fourth place, Capital Gold and Jazz FM.
However, the real surprise for the survey was the high percentage of over-45s tuning into new-music station Xfm. Its audience is made up of 26% over-45s, ahead of Capital FM at 25% and only just behind Heart FM, at 28%.
Virgin FM and Kiss 100 have the lowest audiences of over-45s, at 24% and 23% respectively.
In the same statement today, GfK's national radio figures showed that TalkSPORT is the most listened to radio station in the country, with a weekly reach of 5.9m for the January 26 to April 25 period, ahead of Classic FM with 5.5m.
GfK has a three-year deal with Kelvin MacKenzie's The Wireless Group to test its Radiocontrol system on his TalkSPORT national station. MacKenzie is involved in a bitter £66m legal battle with Rajar over the way that radio audiences are measured. There are reports that electronic measurement will be in place by 2006.
