George Lucas reveals plans for a Star Wars television series

LONDON – The final 'Star Wars' movie might be upon fans in less than a month, but the story will not end there as creator George Lucas revealed at the weekend that he plans a television series based on the saga.

'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith' opens at cinemas worldwide on May 19, concluding the six movie arc that began with 'Star Wars: A New Hope' in 1977.

Fans has thought that would be the end of 'Star Wars' on the screen, but at the weekend Lucas confirmed previous rumours about a television show based on the Star Wars universe as he made a rare public appearance over the weekend at Star Wars Celebration III conference in Indianapolis.

Attended by more than 30,000 fans, Lucas appeared at a packed out Q&A session where he said he was working on developing a live-action television series based on 'Star Wars'.

He told the audience that the series would not likely arrive for at least a year. He also said that he story would not focus on the characters in the movies, but would pick up on other stories from the Star Wars universe.

There is a lot to choose from. Star Wars has spawn dozens of books dealing with the Jedi Knights and other characters from Star Wars.

Lucas told fans that the TV series would pick up the story following 'Revenge of the Sith', which deals with the destruction of the Jedi Knights and the emergence of Darth Vader, and fill in the gap between that and the first Star Wars movie that takes place 20 years later.

Lucas has already said that he will not make any more movies. Fans had hoped for another trilogy either to fill in the gaps between the three newest movies and the original three, or to pick up the story after the death of Darth Vader in 'Return of the Jedi'.

However, Lucas told fans that he had never thought beyond 'Return of the Jedi'. He said the story was meant to begin with the birth of Darth Vader and end when he was killed by Luke Skywalker.

Lucas also confirmed a new CGI animation series, which follows the success of the existing animated series 'Clone Wars' series that has been hugely successful.
