Chalmers, who replaces Nick Hewat in the role, has held the head of network sales job at GWR since 2002.
During an 11-year career in radio, Chalmers has also worked as group head on Classic FM and as head of trading for GWR. He started his career at Capital Advertising in 1994.
Chalmers' role will be to maximise revenues across all of GCap's stations. His responsibilities will include developing the business plan for all agency sales staff and managing agency sales group heads.
GCap Media national managing director Duncan George said: "This is an important role for GCap. Ed possesses the right combination of customer focus, trading skills and brand insight to develop a highly dynamic agency sales operation."
