The Game of Thrones finale attracted 3.8 million viewers on Sky, the biggest-ever overnight audience for the show.

The last episode of the long-awaited eighth series beat audience numbers for the finale of series seven by 26% (up from three million), according to overnight figures from Sky.

A spokeswoman at Sky explained that these figures are likely to be a fraction of the overall audience, because many customers watch shows on-demand. This would include those watching through the Now TV, Virgin Media and online platforms.

It is understood that the majority of the audience (3.2 million) tuned in to find out who would ultimately sit on the "iron throne" at the 2am slot – the same time that the show is aired in the US, though this was across live and video-on-demand.

The episode was then repeated at 9pm on Sky Atlantic on Monday night.

The average weekly audience for the eighth series was also the highest-ever for GoT at 6.2 million, breaking series seven's record of 4.7 million.
