It is bad news for the brand, which has already received a slating at the hands of the British media over the revelation that the product is made from tap water from Sidcup after going through a purification process and adding minerals.
In a statement on the , the company says that the withdrawal is voluntary and that there is no immediate health or safety issue. Reports say that it will affect around 500,000 bottles of water.
The problem comes with the process of adding calcium chloride into the water. Because of the high level of bromide in the calcium chloride a bromide derivative called bromate was formed at a level that exceeded UK legal standards.
The Food Standards Association has been informed of the recall, with a spokesperson saying: "This is a sensible measure by the company as bromate is a chemical that could cause an increased cancer risk as a result of long-term exposure, although there is no immediate risk to public health."
Coca-Cola has a helpline number set up for customers who have concerns over the product, or wish to return any bottles they have purchased.
The company is waiting to release a television advertising campaign, created by Lowe, to support the Dasani launch and has also signed the singer Javine to back it.
The recall is expected to be completed within 24 hours.
