Friends spin-off Joey sparks bidding war for UK rights

LONDON - Channel 4, Five and BSkyB are reported to be in a bidding war for 'Joey', the spin-off series from 'Friends', with episodes set to be sold for as much as $1m each.

According to reports, UK buyers have been shown the pilot of the show, in which dim but lovable Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc, has moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

Sky is being already tipped to win the UK rights to the show from terrestrial rivals in much the same way it won the third series of '24' from the BBC.

Although it has already been described as "no 'Friends'", with only the characters of Ross and Rachel, played by David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston, set to make an appearance in 'Joey', it is likely to be hugely popular with audiences.

Other actors set to have regular roles in the series include Drea de Matteo, who has been in 'The Sopranos', and will play one of Joey's sisters; and Paul Costanzo, who will play de Matteo's son Michael.

Joey is also set to have a romantic interest in the form of a neighbour called Allison, played by Ashley Scott.

It will start screening in the US next September. 'Friends' finished this year after 10 years.
