Freeview success key to switch-off, claims boss

Seaman: predicts bumper Xmas sales

Freeview is confident the Government will reach its deadline for analogue switch-off. In an exclusive interview with Media Week, general manager Matt Seaman claimed the success of Freeview - which now has more than two million customers - has given Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell the green light to move toward a totally digital TV marketplace.

"Certainly Jowell, a couple of months ago, was saying analogue switch-off is very much on the agenda. So I think, without Freeview, it would be difficult to see how analogue switch-off would happen," said Seaman.

He said Freeview had restored the public's confidence in the platform and put this down to the simple one-off cost message.

Seaman predicts bumper sales this Christmas and is relaxed about moves to launch paid-for services on Freeview for up to £10 per month. "There's bound to be periphery services that ride on the back of Freeview...

customers should not feel in any way obliged to pay any more money for anything." he said.

He denied there was an implicit battle with Sky, saying: "We know Sky customers would never come to Freeview, it's not a question in our mind."
