The plans for the introduction of the BBC iPlayer on Freeview are also expected ahead of schedule. The deal would mean iPlayer-enabled Freeview boxes would be available in time for Christmas. Online content could then be viewed through a TV.

Profit for Freeview+ is up 64% year-on-year. It was launched last autumn and has so far sold 1.4m set top boxes.

Freeview HD content was originally set to launch in line with the digital switchover timetable.
