Freelancers need more support, says new Major Players study

Recruitment specialist, Major Players, has experienced a 30% increase in the number of freelance vacancies across the creative, digital and marketing industry over the past year.

Amidst the rise of freelancers in an uncertain economy, Major Players surveyed 231 freelancers to uncover key insights into the freelance life - from the average working hours, daily rates and downtime, to the main challenges they face and motivations for deciding to embark on a freelance career in the first place.

Key findings from the 2017 includes:

  • 2 in 3 freelancers spend at least 10% of their year in downtime

  • 1 in 2 think they’re financially better off as a freelancer than they would be in a permanent role

  • The average freelance working week is 31-40 hours

  • There is a disparity in daily rates between the genders

Allison Upton, Marketing Director, Major Players, comments: "Our research confirms that freelancers need a more frequent supply of work, a community of other freelancers and support from employers or recruitment consultancies to help their careers flourish, whether that be through networking and training opportunities or general career advice.

to learn about:

  • Freelancers’ typical working week and pay trends

  • What motivates people to go freelance

  • The challenges freelancers face and support they need

  • Perceptions of online portals to find freelance work

  • Employers’ perspectives

  • Future outlook for freelancers

  • And much more!

Major Players is due to launch a new community as well as a benefits package to help freelancers forge a longer-term career with training, benefits, events and access to talk to other freelancers. Major Collective will be available for all freelancers who work through Major Players for at least three or more bookings.
