Fox News apologises after presenter's UN rape remark

LONDON - Fox News has apologised after a presenter described the United Nations as an organisation that 'sends peacekeepers to the Congo to rape young children'.

The comment was made by Andrew Napolitano during a debate on Fox News programme 'The Big Story' on April 26.

A viewer complained to media regulator Ofcom about the comment, which Fox News said had been made during an unscripted and emotional debate over the nomination of John Bolton as the new US ambassador to the UN.

Napolitano made the comment after another person involved in the debate, former Democrat senator Carol Moseley Braun, said the UN should appoint a more conciliatory figure.

Two days later, he told viewers that what he had meant to say was that the UN had sent peacekeepers to the Congo "and there have been reports that some of them had raped children". He also apologised for the confusion.

Ofcom said that it was a serious allegation, but found that it was unfortunate and expressed in a clumsy manner.

"We welcome the apology and clarification by Fox News, and regard the matter as resolved," Ofcom said.

Fox is famously tries to present itself a s "fair and balanced" channel, but commentators often point to a right-wing and President Bush supporting agenda.

This was further exposed recently in an embarrasssing slip by Fox's London bureau chief Scott Norvell who, writing in the Wall Street Journal recently to attack the BBC, revealed how he saw Fox's opinionated news agenda.

"Even we at Fox News manage to get some lefties on the air occasionally, and often let them finish their sentences before we club them to death and feed the scraps to Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly.

"Fox News is, after all, a private channel and our presenters are quite open about where they stand on particular stories. That's our appeal. People watch us because they know what they are getting. The Beeb's institutionalised leftism would be easier to tolerate if the corporation was a little more honest about it," Norvell wrote.
