Former Telegraph editor launches Middle East paper

LONDON - Former Daily Telegraph editor Martin Newland launches his United Arab Emirates newspaper, The National, on newsstands tomorrow, after eight months of preparation.

The English-language paper will be published six days a week, featuring 80 pages of news, business, sports, culture and features coverage.

It has a 200-strong team of journalists, including several former Telegraph employees, who are based throughout the United Arab Emirates and in foreign bureaux across the world.

Newland, editor-in-chief of The National, said: "Content will be designed to reflect our readers' concerns in relation to the national character of the UAE, in the context of an interconnected world."

The paper is owned by an investment fund controlled by the government of Abu Dhabi, the largest emirate in the UAE.

It was unveiled today at a gala event in Abu Dhabi which was attended by General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.
