Ford denies Christian pressure as it ends ads in gay magazines

DETROIT - Ford has denied that pressure from conservative Christian groups are responsible for its decision to stop advertising in gay magazines.

The denial came as the motor giant said that its Jaguar and Land Rover brands will no longer advertise in gay publications.

Mike Moran, a Ford spokesman, said: "The decisions with regard to advertising was a business decision."

Moran added that the move by the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, which are part of Ford's Premier Automotive Group, was part of an overall cutback in advertising spend at the loss-making division.

"They feel pressure on their marketing budgets, so they decided to streamline marketing across the board. They're not supporting as many publications and events as before in 2006," Moran said.

The move does not affect the main Ford Lincoln and Mercury brands, which do not advertise in gay magazines. The same is true of Ford in the UK.

The brands had previously advertised in magazines such as the fortnightly Advocate magazine, which currently features a prominent Mercedes-Benz ad on its website.

Ford's move came days after the American Family Association called off its planned nationwide boycott of Ford. The pro-family conservative Christian group called for a boycott of Ford and launched a website documenting the company's track record of support for what it called "the homosexual agenda" through donations to gay groups and sponsorship of gay pride events.

Donald Wildmon, AFA chairman, said: "We called for a boycott of Ford, then a group of dealers requested a meeting with us -- and we've met with Ford several times in the last several months. They've heard our concerns; they have responded, we think, in a very positive way. We've opened lines of communication, [and] we think those lines of communication will stay open."

The AFA claimed that when the boycott was first announced, tens of thousands of concerned Christians responded to an online pledge to boycott Ford before the effort was suspended.

The AFA's contact with Ford and suspension of the boycott has led to talk of a secret deal with the conservative group, according to gay groups and civil rights campaigners.

The US Human Rights 北京赛车pk10 said: ''If there is an agreement with AFA, we expect Ford to disavow it. We expect Ford to publicly reaffirm its historic support for our community. And, we expect Ford to meet with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) representatives this week to resolve these concerns.''

However, Moran denied talk of a deal with the AFA.

''We have no confidential agreement with the AFA,'' he told Associated Press.
