Football sponsors hit in £30m media rights row

The Premier and Football Leagues are targeting newspapers' fantasy league football revenues in a tit-for-tat row that threatens to damage the profile of the UK's major football sponsors.

In retaliation, all but two national newspaper groups 'censored' credits for Barclays, Carling and Coca-Cola, sponsors of the Premier League, League Cup and Football League, from weekend football coverage.

The leagues' rights agency, Football DataCo, has demanded a cut of fantasy league revenues, estimated to be worth £5m, and rights to the competitions.

It is the latest exchange in a long-standing row over the leagues' attempt to restrict coverage on newspapers' websites and mobile phone services.

Negotiations over such coverage have broken down.

Newspapers are incensed by what they describe as the leagues' 'naked greed'. They argue that their coverage already provides £30m of media value.

The leagues claim that newspapers have moved into commercial areas that conflict with their own. They have set a 31 October deadline to resolve the issue.

Coca-Cola said it was monitoring the situation closely. Barclays declined to comment.
