Authors from the Commonwealth and Republic of Ireland are eligible for the prize, now in its 35th year. Last year's winner was Vernon God Little by Canadian DBC Pierre.
- This year's shortlist is: The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst; The Electric Michelangelo by Sarah Hall; I'll Go to Bed at Noon by Gerard Woodward; Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell; The Master by Colm Toibin; and Bitter Fruit by Achmat Dangor, which is the current leader in the online People's Poll.
