1. You want to feel more energised than exhausted
Is your job challenging and interesting enough? Or is it too challenging? Tiredness is to be expected at the end of a long working day but if your job saps all the energy out of you and leaves you feeling physically and emotionally drained, it may be time to act. You can try and alter your working patterns or talk to your line manager about other changes you could make such as alternative roles in your company. Otherwise, it may be time to look elsewhere.
2. A more meaningful career is out there
How meaningful is your job? Granted, most of us need to earn a living. However, there is a difference between merely working to pay the bills and a role that has at least some other value to you. Do you feel you have accomplished something at the end of the day? Are there opportunities to grow your career? If not, you may be missing out on more rewarding roles.
3. Culture clash
Have you thought about the culture of the company you work for and whether this fits in with your values and goals? For example, does a culture of long working hours with big financial rewards motivate you or are you more about work/life balance? Do you enjoy working in teams regularly or do you prefer to mostly work independently? Try to choose a company or role that complements your needs and values. Recruitment agencies are a good port of call to help you determine the right cultural fit as they often have insider knowledge about the company culture of key industry employers.
4. You’d like to get on better with colleagues
The colleagues beside you are the people you spend the majority of your day with, so it’s crucial you get to know them. If you don’t get on with a large amount of those you work with, it could impact on your productivity. The interpersonal barriers could make you less efficient than you would be if you got on well with them. You can try to make more of an effort to network and build relationships but if your efforts are to no avail then it could be time to move on.
5. You know you deserve better
When it comes to your salary, the key is to balance your expectations with reality. On the one hand you may ‘feel’ that you deserve more but are other people in similar positions a lot better off?
