Five revamps teams as hunt for programme chief kicks off

LONDON - Five is to change the reporting structure of its programming team and is on the hunt for a director of programmes.

The revamp is designed to simplify the reporting structure following the appointment of Lisa Opie as Five's managing director of content in December. At the time of Opie's appointment, Five parted company with Dan Chambers, its director of programmes.

The broadcaster confirmed it is looking to appoint a director of programmes for the main channel, reporting directly to Opie, in an attempt to fill the gap created by Chambers' departure.

The existing factual commissioning department, consisting of history, science, arts and religious programming, will remain the same.

The restructure will include the recruitment of a head of factual to replace Justine Kershaw, who currently fills the role but is leaving in the summer to set up her own production company. The position will report to the new director of programmes.

Drama and special events will become part of an enlarged features and entertainment department, reporting to the director of programmes.

Sport, news and current affairs, factual entertainment, comedy, and children's programming will become the responsibility of the director of programmes.

Acquisitions, and scheduling and planning, will report to Opie as will Hannah Barnes, the newly appointed director of programming for Five Life and Five US.

Opie said: "By streamlining the reporting structure of the programming team we will be better placed to have a unified sense of brand ownership across all genres, as well as becoming more nimble and responsive editorially.

"This new structure will allow us to make the most of commercial opportunities in terms of converging content across Five's family of channels and allow us to share creative expertise within the programming teams."
