Five jobs axed as Universal McCann shuts press team

LONDON - Universal McCann has made five redundancies from its 120-strong UK team and folded its regional press department.

Among the redundancies, Melissa Smith, head of regional press, has left the company along with another unnamed executive in its regional press team, a junior planner, plus Simon Prindiville from the TV department.

The loss of the Vision Express account to Walker Media in July last year reduced the need for a specific regional press department.

The economic downturn is believed to have hit Universal McCann's regional press spend further.

The main press department already handled some regional press planning and buying, and it has expanded its remit to handle all regional business.

The cuts are believed to have been isolated streamlining, rather than a wider restructure.
Media Week revealed last week that Universal McCann's head of press and managing partner, Dan Pimm, had left the Interpublic-owned agency without a job to go to. Deputy press director Eve Samuel-Camps has taken the role of head of press.

Universal McCann declined to comment on the recent changes.

In December, Tim Smith, who was head of consumer futures EMEA at Universal McCann, left the agency after seven years in the job to set up his own web research and social media company.
