First World War Centenary marked with series of events

A series of events to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, which marked the start of World World One, are being held across the UK this weekend.

The events, led by Imperial War Museums (IWM), include the Woolwich Great Get Together Festival and Armed Forces Day, taking place over the 27-28 June. Viisitors can meet members of IWM’s team and find out how they can contribute to a permanent digital memorial created by IWM.

Cultural festival LIFT 2014 will culminate in a three-day takeover at Battersea Arts Centre. Stan’s Cafe will use several thousand dominoes to demonstrate the impact of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, while York Castle Musuem's centenary exhibition, which opens on 28 June, will see visitors being sent to the recruitment office and travelling via train to the horrors of the front line - from rats to foot rot, shell shock to gas warfare.
