Fiona Phillips attacks GMTV for being hijacked by sponsors' money

LONDON - 'GMTV' presenter Fiona Phillips has criticised her bosses at the ITV breakfast show for 'hijacking the quality of content' in favour of making money and sponsorship, but has not immediate plans to quit.

Phillips, who has spent nine years hosting 'GMTV' with Eamonn Holmes, recalled breaking off an interview with Prime Minister Tony Blair to cut to a sponsored piece about Christmas leftovers.

"I remember having to break away from an interview with Tony Blair to a sponsored item about Christmas leftovers. We got slated for it," Phillips said in an interview with the Media Guardian today.

Despite such indignities, Phillips confirmed she plans to carry on presenting the show at least until 2007.

"Despite reports that I'm planning to quit the sofa, I'm here to stay," she said.

The presenter also admitted to being incensed by the interactive elements of the show, saying it has become more about "selling everything than the content".

'GMTV' sponsorship deals over the past six months include OxiClean stain remover, Buena Vista and Beefeater restaurants.

Phillips joined 'GMTV' as an entertainment correspondent in 1993 before going on to replace Anthea Turner as Holmes co-host in 1996.

Holmes announced he was leaving the show in January after 12 years for a new role at the BBC, after proving a hit on the corporation's 'National Lottery Jet Set' and 'Hard Spell'.

He said he was fed up with the early starts and wants to spend more time with his family in Belfast.

Phillips said, on hearing the news that Holmes was leaving the show after nine years presenting together, was like "being dumped".
