Financial Times and CNN first choice for opinion leaders

LONDON - The Financial Times and CNN have been confirmed as the newspaper and TV station of choice for Europe's business, government and media leaders in the new European Opinion Leaders Survey 2003.

The survey, published this week by Ipsos-RSL, showed that the FT is considered the most influential and credible of the continent's business newspapers.

CNN recorded a daily reach of 30.1%, beating BBC World on 20.3%, Euronews on 18%, CNBC on 4.2% and Bloomberg on 3.9%. CNN's monthly reach of 59.7% is almost as great as the combined monthly reach of all other international news channels at 62.6%.

Jonathan Davies, senior vice-president of news advertising sales at Turner Broadcasting System Europe, CNN's parent company, said: "The survey findings are a huge endorsement of CNN's significance as the leading media brand in Europe, and confirms CNN as offering the most effective way for advertisers to reach this highly influential demographic."

However, the FT does not lead in the UK. At home, it is The Times that was shown to be the number one choice for opinion leaders, reaching 52% of the sample, compared with 44% for the Sunday Times, 41% for the Financial Times and 34% for The Economist.

Gill Hart, marketing director for the Financial Times in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "Once again, the FT clearly leads the way in Europe. If you want to influence the influencers in the UK and Europe, then the Financial Times is the daily newspaper for the elite, decision-maker audience."

The announcement of results from the European Opinion Leaders Survey comes on the back of last week's unveiling of the British Business Survey 2003, which showed that among UK managers, the Times and the Daily Mail were the favorite business newspapers.

The European Opinion Leaders Survey 2003 covers readership of 12 international titles and 58 national titles across Europe and studied the media habits of more than 31,000 opinion leaders across Europe.
