The duo are renowned for their onscreen chemistry and often descend into giggles or tears over the stories the show covers. But lately a rift has developed between the two after Britton discovered Schofield's earnings.
Britton was paid £700,000 a year for 'This Morning', whereas Schofield is reported to be on a £2m contract with ITV, for which he also fronts 'Dancing On Ice'.
Britton is said to have been particularly angry when she discovered that Schofield was paid £45,000 for a show they both host -- 'All Star Mr and Mrs' -- whereas she was paid just £15,000. Schofield is also set to host a new ITV show called 'The Cube'.
According to press reports, Britton is quitting the show to spend more time with her family, but the reality is that she feels undervalued and resentful of Schofield's success.
One report, quoting an ITV source, said: "Fern simply isn't enjoying the show as she once did. She felt she was living in Philip's shadow and decided it was time to move on."
Many will question whether Britton's departure will have a negative effect on ratings. Britton's bubbly nature provides a counterpart to Schofield's slicker onscreen persona, and she is one of 'This Morning's biggest draws. Whether ITV can find a replacement who works as well with Schofield, remains to be seen.
Favourites to replace her include former 'GMTV' host Fiona Phillips and Ruth Langsford, who presents 'This Morning' on Fridays.
Britton, who has led the show for 10 years and worked with Schofield for six-and-a-half, issued a statement that failed to mention him by name.
She said: "After 10 years with 'This Morning', I have decided to leave at the end of the series.
"I will present my last show on July 17, my birthday, which seems appropriate."
Schofield is said to have been saddened by the news of her resignation.
This is not the first time that Britton has been annoyed by ITV. Last year she threatened to walk out of 'This Morning' because of a row over her having a gastric band fitted.
