The Football Association is to consider sponsorship for the new
national stadium in a move that sports industry insiders say could be
worth more than £15m a year.
The FA and government are expected to announce today (Wednesday) that
Wembley has been selected as the site for the stadium, and are looking
at a range of options for recouping the expected £700m cost.
It is understood a title sponsor has been ruled out because of likely
opposition from fans. But a brand or collection of brands may be able to
pay to tie up with the stadium's events and marketing activity.
Sources have also suggested the FA's future commercial partners will be
given the option to associate themselves with the stadium.
Stadium tie-ups have become more popular in recent years: Reebok is
title sponsor of Bolton Wanderers' stadium and Friends Provident backs
Southampton FC's ground.
A final decision is expected shortly. The FA refused to comment ahead of
today's announcement.
