FA links with Carlsberg in anti-hooliganism drive

The Football Association has teamed up with sponsor Carlsberg for a nationwide effort to combat hooliganism at England away games.

The campaign, which will use Carlsberg's Euro 2004 campaign strapline 'Your country needs you', will promote the FA's official England fans' club.

The club, which has 20,000 members, was launched in 2001 to tackle the problem of yobbish behaviour by vetting travelling fans. The campaign is the first time the FA has promoted the club jointly with one of its sponsors.

The promotion, which will encourage fans to seek more information about the club online, will run on 600,000 24-can packs of Carlsberg in retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. Ads will also feature on more than 2m beer mats in pubs and bars owned by operators such as Punch, Enterprise and Spirit.

A spokesman for the FA said: 'One of the main reasons for the campaign is to encourage positive support for the England team when they are travelling and to attract new members.'

The promotion will run until October 13 to coincide with the England team's opening World Cup qualifier matches.

Carlsberg has decided to retain the 'Your country needs you' strapline until the World Cup in 2006.
