FA axes women's football post in bid to cut costs

The Football Association has dealt a blow to the marketing of women's football by axing the role of Sarah Harris as part of sweeping cutbacks aimed at saving the governing body £3m a year.

Harris, the FA's marketing manager for women's football, was made redundant, along with five of her colleagues in the marketing and communications department run by Paul Barber.

The redundancies account for about 20% of the jobs in the department, an identical proportion to cuts in other areas of the FA.

Other job cuts included business development manager Neil Wilson, while head of business development James Worrall, who left voluntarily earlier this year, will not be replaced.

Former BBC journalist Paul Newman, the FA's director of communications, was also ousted as Barber slashed a six-figure sum from his department's budget.

Barber, who is still in the frame to become the FA's chief executive, was ordered to make the cutbacks to combat the spiralling costs of running the organisation and the expense of its Wembley Stadium rebuilding project.
