Express and Star among fallers in national dailies slump

LONDON - The Daily Express and Daily Star's estimated readerships are down 17% and 15% respectively for the October to March year on year, according to the latest figures from the National Readership Survey.

The report, measuring estimates of national readership figures for newspapers and magazines, indicates that Richard Desmond's Daily Express is down to 1,784,000 from 2,160,000 year on year, the biggest fall experienced by a national daily newspaper, with the Daily Star following suit, falling to 1,580,000 from 1,864,000.

The figures largely correspond with Friday's ABC results, which also found the Daily Express and Daily Star to have fallen 10.45% and 7.12% respectively.

The trend for declining readership figures was matched by many other national dailies, with the Daily Mirror falling 12% to 3,884,000, the Daily Mail dropping 8% to 5,427,000, The Guardian down 7% to 1,158,000, the Daily Telegraph slipping 7% to 2,061,000, and The Sun also marginally down 2% to 8,073,000.

The only national daily titles to buck the trend were The Independent, which increased 18% to 751,000, and The Times, up 9% to 1,809,000.

However, falling readerships were a similar story for most of the national Sundays, with the Daily Star Sunday down 17% to 932,000, the Sunday Mirror falling 10% to 4,228,000 and the Sunday Express sliding 10% to 2,099,000.

The figures were matched by the Mail on Sunday, down 6% to 6,146,000, The Sunday Times, falling 4% to 3,478,000, and the News of the World, also down 2% to 8,562,000.

The NRS figures indicate there were only three Sunday titles which managed to increase their year-on-year readerships for the period, with Scotland on Sunday leading the way, up 18% to 357,000, followed by the Independent on Sunday rising 4% to 775,000 and The People, up marginally 1% to 1,945,000.

The NRS results, which are based on interviews with a representative sample of 36,000 UK adults, paint a gloomy outlook for the newspaper industry, but are said to be a less accurate indicator than the monthly ABC figures.

The NRS provides readership estimates for 270 publications.
