The websites and offices for Germany, Spain and France will be shut down in July, along with other websites that are run from the London's headquarters but directed at other European markets, such as the Netherlands and Scandinavia. It is understood that 85 jobs will be cut, but it is not clear whether any of these will be in the UK or Italy.
Excite@Home has a 58% stake in the portal Excite UK, which is a joint venture with BT, and a 30% interest in Excite Italia, which it owns in partnership with Tiscali.
Patti Hart, Excite@Home's chairman and chief executive officer, said, "While it is disappointing that market conditions make it necessary to discontinue certain European businesses, it is important for us to continue to focus more closely on our strengths."
The company said it would continue with its European broadband internet access ventures, including @Home Benelux, and with its portal operations in Japan and Australia.
Excite UK generated revenue of £10m in 2000, and £2.2m in the quarter ending March 31 2001.
