Ex US football star apologises for Saddam ad apology

NEW YORK - A US car salesman and former New York Giants football star has been criticised for an advertisement making fun of Saddam Hussein and criticised again after apologising for making the ad.

The ad, which aired on radio in New Jersey, for the Brad Benson Mitsubishi Hyundai car dealership promised Saddam Hussein a free car every year for the rest of his life -- but on condition that the Iraqi dictator leave his country for good.

Some people complained that he should not have offered Saddam a free car, while others said that the ad was making fun of a serious situation, so Benson ran a second ad, apologising for the first ad. However, more than 700 people then objected to that ad, saying Benson had nothing to apologise for.

In the first ad, Benson, whose website boasts that he played number 60 for the New York Giants in one of the greatest Giants' squads of all time, said: "If he'll just give up now and get out of Iraq, I'll give him a brand new Mitsubishi, nicely equipped, every year for the rest of his life.

"How about a four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Outlander, a perfect choice for running away in the desert?"

Reports say that Benson, who has retired from the NFL and is now devoted to his wife, children and ensuring that customers of Brad Benson Mitsubishi Hyundai are happy, is planning to try his luck with a third ad.
