LONDON (Brand Republic) - Lord Birt, the former director general of the BBC, is heading a list of candidates to take charge of the planned super-communications regulator Ofcom.

Ofcom, which is due to be launched by the government in three years’ time, will combine the Office of Telecommunications, the Radio Authority and the Independent Television Commission and will govern competition and content.

Other candidates include Denise Kingsmill, deputy chairman of the Competition Commission; National Lottery Commission chairman Terry Burns; Patricia Hodgson, chief executive of the ITC; and David Edmonds, director general of Oftel.

Edmonds is widely tipped to lead a shadow organisation in the transitional stage before Ofcom launches officially.
