Using a screen provided by ADI TV, EventBeat published 230 pictures and comments throughout the Tyneside half marathon, and received more than 30,000 tweets. Its Twitter wall was being displayed in between live BBC coverage of the event.

Nick Johnson, EventBeat director, said: "During the day and prior to the run starting in Newcastle, all the crowds were standing in the rain and tweeting their good luck messages to runners.

"During EventBeat’s control of the screen we were monitoring the Great North Run hashtag on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and we were putting the best comments or pictures up.

"What was nice was that later, as the runners were then coming through the finishing line, they started getting involved and were tweeting their times and pictures. It was a great way of interacting with everybody, especially during the rainy conditions."

The race was won by Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele, who narrowly beat British Olympic champion Mo Farah, while other famous faces at the event included Iwan Thomas, Sophie Raworth and Robbie Savage.
