My Event World - Kat Morris

Kat Morris has worked in the industry for more than 12 years and is currently festival director at independent music events company Mama & Co. She talked to Event about launching a new festival and her not-so-secret love of music.

I got into the event industry because I did two months of work experience as a label assistant at Finger Lickin' records after my A Levels and loved it. Following that I was recruited to work for MTV in their European events team, which was the start of my career in the events industry. I've never looked back.

I have worked at Mama since January 2007, originally joining the company as an event coordinator for The Great Escape festival. I was promoted to operations manager in 2008 and then to festival director in 2012.

I also took on the role of festival director for Somersault in its inaugural year and now work across both festivals.

I was attracted to this particular role because first and foremost I love music. But I also wanted to work with like-minded people and I am obsessively organised.

Not many people know that I originally trained as a singer, but am much more comfortable on this side of the stage.

The best event I've been involved in was the first ever Somersault, last year. The whole event went brilliantly, the sun shone across the five days. It was magical and adored by festival-goers and crew alike.

It was such a huge sense of pride for myself and the whole team seeing the festival come together for the first time.

If I could do it all over again I would honestly not change a thing. I'm pretty happy with the route I've taken.

The one thing I can't stand is making mistakes. Obviously you learn from them, but I get pretty annoyed with myself.

Outside of work I spend my time going to other festivals and gigs, as experiencing live music is a real passion of mine. I also love to eat out a lot discovering new eateries, but I'm also very happy at home cooking for friends.

I also love to keep fit by swimming.

If money were no object I would set up my own festival that runs as a social enterprise.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be... I really love my role, so I'd like to do similar roles on different festivals or maybe apply what I've learnt to an events role in the third sector.

If I ruled the event industry I would make listening to music a compulsory part of the working day.
