Big names in fashion, including Naomi Campbell, David and Victoria Beckham and Poppy Delevingne, were in attendance at the event presented by and Kering. Guests were given a first-look at the 240-piece exhibition, before dining in the museum’s Raphael Gallery.
The menu was created by The Cellar Society and served by waiters in black kilts and tartan sock trims, with make-up and hair styled by MAC Cosmetics and Bumble and Bumble with Radio respectively. Once dinner was over, guests moved into the Porter Gallery for the after-party, which featured a dance performance featuring a cameo appearance from Kate Moss.
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty opens to the public tomorrow (14 March). The show, which originated at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, features 66 additional garments and accessories, including rare early pieces and a new section focusing on McQueen’s early London collections.
Production company Gainsbury and Whiting worked with the museum to curate the exhibition. Multisensory zones include a holographic 3D image of Kate Moss appearing in a rippling organza gown and the Cabinet of Curiosities: a double-height gallery showcasing McQueen’s collaborations and interspersed with film footage of nearly all his catwalk shows.
The show is being presented in partnership with crystal brand Swarovski and supported by American Express, MAC Cosmetics and Samsung.
A number of events have been organised to complement the exhibition experience. These include talks with the London College of Fashion, model Erin O’Connor and Alexander McQueen’s current creative director Sarah Burton.
Additionally, Swarovski will be displaying items from its Central Saint Martins Design Project outside the National Art Library and James Gager, MAC’s senior vice president group creative director, will discuss the drama of the brand’s make-up looks with fashion photographer Miles Aldridge at a special reception.
