The ad is for luxury watch brand Patek Philippe and spans 20cm across two columns. The deal was brokered by Jane Wolfson, head of non-broadcast at Mediabrands agency Initiative.

Simon Davies, ad director at the Evening Standard, said the move "highlights the independence, individuality and innovation" of the new Evening Standard.

Separately, today John Bryant, the former executive editor of the Daily Mail and current chairman of the Press Association Trust, has been appointed as chairman of the Evening Standard's new Editorial Committee.

The committee is responsible for safeguarding the editorial independence of the newspaper and was established following its acquisition by Lebedev in February.

Bryant joins former New Statesman editor and Observer deputy editor Anthony Howard, and former Daily Mirror deputy editor Bill Hagerty.
