In a major shake-up, Rhodes has moved on from News Group Newspapers, where she was managing director. She is to lead a venture into magazine publishing by News International, and has been appointed chief executive of the new division.
The news was announced to News Group staff yesterday at 6pm, a News International spokeswoman said.
Associated has announced that its former managing director Bert Hardy will fill Anderson's role in a caretaker capacity.
Anderson is a long-time Associated Newspapers figure, having spent three separate spells at the company, punctuated by new-business and marketing roles at media agencies CIA and PHD, as well as a brief stint at Yorkshire Television.
He has been managing director at the Evening Standard since September 2002, and prior to that was managing director of freesheet Metro from March 2000.
Anderson's two previous spells at Associated were as client sales executive on The Mail on Sunday, rising to client sales manager, and then as client sales manager on the Evening Standard.
His arrival gives News International freesheet experience at a time when it is building a team to compete for the contract to distribute a free afternoon paper in London. As well as his involvement with Metro, he played a large part in the introduction of the Evening Standard's free lunchtime edition Standard Lite.
However, he looks set to have his hands full with the national tabloids, which are fighting against circulation decline.
Rhodes is the wife of Clive Milner, who oversees News Group and Times Newspapers in a group managing director role. She has been News Group managing director since 2001.
The changes come in the wake of a big reshuffle of News International senior executives. It saw News Group general manager Richard Webb leave after apparently missing out on promotion. The role of Times Newspapers general manager went to the company's marketing director Andrew Mullins.
Rhodes was handling News International's media planning and buying review, which was announced in June, threatening Carat's decade-long hold on the business.
