EU to back food firms' GDA labels

The European Union draft regulations on food labelling, which support the Guideline Daily Amounts system, have been welcomed by major food manufacturers.

Last week, the EU indicated that it was in favour of the GDA system and wanted member states to use it. Although it said there would be flexibility for countries that wanted to adopt other schemes, it was seen as a snub to the Food Standards Agency's traffic light system.

Kraft corporate affairs director Jonathan Horrell said: 'This is an endorsement of GDAs; we welcome that element of the proposals.'

Chris Wermann, communications director for Kellogg northern Europe, who leads labelling for the cereal company, said the announcement was indicative of the way the debate would progress.

Wermann, whose firm was the first to adopt the GDA system three years ago, added that the EU has spent time reviewing what the key markets were already doing in a bid to create a single system.
