Epsom in search for Derby backer

Epsom Downs Racecourse has hired sports marketing specialist Sportcel to find a global partner for the Derby.

The search follows Vodafone's announcement earlier this year that it would not be continuing its tie to the event. The mobile operator had sponsored the horse race for 13 years.

Sportcel was handed the brief by Epsom Downs Racecourse managing director Stephen Wallis. However, Wallis, who has worked for the racecourse for more than 14 years, is leaving to take up the same role at Newmarket later this year.

According to Epsom Downs Racecourse, the Derby attracts more than 100,000 spectators and a TV audience share of more than 30% for its live coverage on the BBC.

The course is currently redeveloping its grandstand, which is scheduled to reopen in spring 2009. Due to the redevelopment, the next race meeting at Epsom will be the 2008 Derby, which takes place in June.
