
The department, which is led by director of brand and communications Jeremy Davies, is split into six teams - internal communications; PR, public affairs and community relations; online and new media; advertising and marketing communications; brand strategy and engagement; and sponsorship and events.
The 19 jobs will go from the advertising and marketing communications, brand strategy and engagement and internal communications teams. A 90-day consultation period is under way.
The whole department is staffed by about 100 employees. The energy company, which has about 5m UK customers, plans to cut 450 jobs in the UK overall.
E.ON, which is now three years into its four-year title sponsorship of football's FA Cup, is currently reviewing its advertising account, which is held by TBWA\London.
The energy firm has previously used its FA Cup sponsorship to promote its 'green' credentials through its 'Carbon Footyprint' scheme. However, this year it is running a marketing push starring the Redknapp family. In 2008 E.ON also terminated its long-standing title sponsorship deal with Ipswich Town FC.
According to Paul Golby, E.ON's UK chief executive, the group redundancies are part of a process the company started last year to ensure that it can operate a sustainable retail business in the UK.
The energy firm, which has made a financial loss in its retail business in each of the past two years, hopes the job cuts will help it weather the recession.
