England fans take revenge on Thierry Va Va Voodoo Doll

LONDON - It might be in questionable taste, but devoted England fans have a new weapon to help David Beckham and his team mates defeat the French on the field this weekend, in the form of an online voodoo doll of Thierry Henry.

The , which might be considered in questionable taste by even the most die-hard England fan, features a facsimile of a Thierry Henry voodoo doll and the words "Cast your spell. Thierry Henry -- annoyingly good, Camembert-munching, garlic-honking froggy goal getter".

Launched ahead of England's debut game in Euro 2004 against France this Sunday in Lisbon, it allows users to drag pins into various places on the doll's body. Once the pin is inserted, Henry cries out one of a number of phrases, such as "Zat is more painful zan zee guillotine" and "Why don't you stick garlic up your derriere?".

Oli Christie, creative director of Panlogic, said: "We built this Va Va Voodoo Doll to follow up from the success of the World Cup 2000 voodoo dolls we did for Batistuta and Ronaldo. These both worked a treat, because Batistuta had a shocker and was substituted and Ronaldo failed to score -- about the only match he didn't score."

Panlogic has created online games for sites including Lastminute.com, BBC and Tesco, although the Va Va Voodoo Doll has not been created for a client, but "purely as an opportunity to have a go at the French and a public exercise in clutching at straws", the company said.

Commenting on concerns that the game was possibly going overboard with the anti-French sentiment, William Makower, chief executive of Panlogic, said: "While we enjoy watching Thierry Henry's skills on the grass at Highbury, national pride takes first place over the next few weeks. Our boys need all the help that we can give them and a bit of online magic might just do the trick for Sunday's game.

"The two Voodoos we developed for the 2000 World Cup worked wonders and kept both Batistuta, and Ronaldo at bay. Let's hope the Panlogic jinx keeps the French wizard from getting on the score-sheet!"
