The 19 staff working on the titles were informed of the plans last week, which would see Slimming disappear after 37 years and Health Plus after four years. The consultation period concludes tomorrow, when Emap will make its decision.
The circulation picture for the two has been gloomy, leading Emap to concede defeat to market trends and stronger rivals.
Slimming has been up against WeightWatchers and Slimming World, which are contract publications from diet clubs, in a market affected by the increased availability of diet advice in other media.
Slimming's circulation in the second half of 2005 was 42,245, down 47.2% over six months and 34.6% year on year. Its competitors each sell and distribute more than 200,000 copies a month.
Health Plus is bottom of the audited titles in the women's health and beauty sector, with a circulation of 64,135 copies in the second half of 2005, despite a relaunch in May last year. Its previous circulation was not ABC audited, but according to the company was 80,510 from April to June 2005.
An Emap spokeswoman, said: "Health Plus has unfortunately failed to get a strong enough foothold in its marketplace."
Emap has made a number of recent changes among its weaker performing magazines, including the closure of Smash Hits, the disposal of Period Living & Traditional Homes and Mixmag, and the planned sales of its French publishing division.
