Emap Radio unifies programming role across Big City stations

LONDON - Emap Radio has created the new post of programme director of its Big City chain of eight Northern stations, appointing its head of radio development Steve King to the role.

King will continue with his work as head of radio development, which involves preparing licence applications, such as Kerrang Radio's bid for the new Manchester FM licence.

The creation of the programme director position indicates Emap is looking to consolidate programming across the Big City Network, which offers FM coverage of 15- to 34-year-olds in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull.

King will join the Big City managing directors' executive committee and report to Emap Radio North managing director Travis Baxter.

King rejoined Emap last year after three years as group programme director at Forever Broadcasting, a radio company bought last year by The Wireless Group.

During his first spell at Emap Radio, he worked as managing director of Big City station Radio Aire. He was also a regional programme director for the Metro Radio Group.
